BWEA Offshore Wind: The Final Frontier
26 Jun 2009
BWEA, the UK’s leading renewable energy trade association, is today launching two key reports, UK Offshore Wind: Staying on Track and Offshore Wind: Charting the Right Course, at the Offshore 09 Conference, the UK’s largest dedicated offshore wind energy event, taking place at the QE2 Centre in Westminster.
The reports set out the timetable and potential costs for a massive expansion of the UK’s offshore wind capacity. The offshore energy revolution, which saw the country become world leader in 2008 in terms of installed capacity, could eventually see every home in the UK powered by electricity from offshore wind by 2020.....

Download PDF2009 Budget: It was good but not good enough
23 Apr 2009
The Renewable Energy Centre yesterday commented that Alistair Darlings 2009 budget took a small step in the right direction towards developing the renewables industry to ensure a firm and stable future for the UK.
With figures amounting to over a billion pounds which would be allocated to reducing carbon emissions and expanding the UK’s renewables portfolio the 2009 budget seemed a positive step forward. Certainly the wind industry, which is expected to contribute to nearly half of the UK’s carbon emissions reduction targets, received a significant cash injection to help offshore projects reach the commissioning stage.....

BWEA, the UK’s leading renewable trade association, welcomed today’s report by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), urging the Government to act in order for employment to be created in the offshore wind sector.
The report ‘Green Jobs: Prospects for creating jobs from offshore wind in the UK’ states that the sector could provide 70 000 jobs in the UK by 2020, with timely Government assistance on supply chain and financing. Dr Gordon Edge, BWEA Director of Economics and Markets, said: “A host of independent studies has shown that the wind sector in the UK can be a motor for economic growth. Wind can provide clean, sustainable energy, while attracting investment and creating employment. It is a win-win situation, which, with the right policy framework in place, can benefit the country as a whole.” ....
