Press Release
11 Jun 2010
Wind Week 2010, the annual UK-wide celebration of wind energy organised by RenewableUK in partnership with the Scottish Renewables Festival, promises a special treat to Londoners on Monday 14th June.
A fully functioning 13.5 meter (43 ft) wind turbine will be installed on the day in Leicester Square by SIAC Wind Power, a member of RenewableUK, from 10am to 4pm.
As every year, Wind Week will see a number of wind farms across the country open their gates to visitors, and a host of educational, entertainment and community based programmes taking place from 12 to 20 June.
Adam Bell, National Campaigns Co-ordinator at EmbraceMyPlanet, a campaign to support renewable energy, says: “Around 200,000 people pass through Leicester Square every day, offering a perfect opportunity to raise awareness of the benefits of wind energy, ahead of the Global Wind Day on 15 June. Visitors will also be able to join the Embrace campaign, and support further take up of renewables.”
On Monday, RenewableUK will be distributing wind themed merchandise and information brochures, and staff will be at hand to answer public inquiries about the technology, which is approaching 5GW of installed capacity in the UK - enough energy to power 3 million homes.
“The UK is currently leading the world in offshore wind, and with 40GW+ of projects at various stages of development, wind energy is changing the way we are powering up our households and businesses. Onshore we have the best resources in Europe, and with the recently introduced feed-in tariffs everyone can benefit from installing a wind turbine. Why not come along on Monday, and find out more?’ said Adam.
