With a peak power of 5 MWp, Gehrlicher has successfully built the Langage Solar Park in the UK’s sunniest regions together with UK power developer Carlton Power Ltd.
On the 15th July 2011 Langage Solar Park (5 MW), one of the largest photovoltaic parks in the history of the United Kingdom, was connected to the English power grid. Located near Plymouth in England’s sunny southwest, the project will annually produce 4.95 million kilowatt hours of clean renewable energy, providing for the needs of about 1,400 three-person households.
Dr. Tim P. Jungblut, Vice President, Commercial, Ground Mounted Systems at Gehrlicher Solar AG: “We are pleased to have established a strong business partnership with Carlton Power who brings extensive experience in the field of power production. We can well imagine realising further PV projects together in the future.”
Built on an area of 14 hectares as a part of the Langage Energy Park, the photovoltaic installation covers an area of about 12 hectares (30 acres). Gehrlicher installed 21,252 Yingli modules and seven SMA inverters. Due to the challenging terrain structure no pile driving could be undertaken in large areas of the site. Gehrlicher responded with a customised gabion mounting system. It was designed specifically to the demands of both the local site as well as of those of the project’s planning requirements and in conjunction with the company’s own GehrTec Base sub-structure.
Gerald Kumerle, Vice President, Technical, Ground Mounted Systems at Gehrlicher Solar: “On the whole, we have installed 542 gabions and are very satisfied with the result. Due to the substructure we were able to respond perfectly to the individual characteristics of the site. This solution is an excellent alternative to conventional pile driving and drilling."
Gehrlicher Solar AG founded its local subsidiary in the United Kingdom in March 2011. The business activity of the new subsidiary Gehrlicher Solar UK encompasses the construction of ground mounted and roof-top systems as well as wholesale of photovoltaic components and systems.
